Space Elevator vocabulary


1. Cargo: the goods carried by a ship, aircraft or other large vehicle

2. Carbon nanotubes: a fullerene molecule having a cylindirical shape

3. Geosynchronous orbit: a circular orbit around the Earth having a period of 24 hours

4. Inertia: the physical force that keeps something in the same position or moving in the same direction

5. Launch: to send something out, such as a new ship into water or a rocket into space.

6. Orbit: the (usually elliptical) path described by one celestial body in its revolution about another.

7. Payload: the amount of explosive that a missile carries, or the equipment carried in a spacecraft.

8. Ribbon: a long narrow strip of material used to tie things together or as a decoration

9. Rocket propulsion: reaction propulsion using stored oxygen for combustion

10. Rocket fuels: an explosive charge that propels a rocket

11. Tensile: the tensile strength of a material such as wire, rope or stone is its ability to support a load without breaking.

12. Tether: a rope or chain used to tie especially an animal to a post or other fixed place, usually so that it can move freely within a small area

13. Space: the area beyond the atmosphere (= air) of the Earth.
